Overview
The Art Academy of Latvia is a public art and design institution on Kalpaka Boulevard in Riga.
It prepares artists, designers, restorers and art historians, and awards degrees at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level, with professional doctorates offered through its Doctoral School. Teaching is organised around specialist departments.
The fine-art options include painting, drawing, graphic art, sculpture, textile, glass art and ceramics. On the design side students can choose fashion, metal, interior, graphic and product design, functional design or visual communication.
Further departments cover scenography, environmental art, restoration, and art history and theory, and some master's tracks such as curatorial studies and POST stand as separate offerings.
Alongside the main specialisation, students keep working on drawing, painting and design skills and follow theoretical courses that build critical thinking and an individual artistic voice. Applicants from abroad can look at the Service Design Strategies and Innovation (SDSI) master's, an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master led by the Academy together with the University of Lapland, the Estonian Academy of Arts and the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga.
The Academy also runs exhibitions, research conferences and fashion and design events in the city.
