Founded 1862 as Riga Polytechnical Institute.
Became part of Latvia University 1919. Renamed Riga Polytechnical Institute 1958.
Acquired present status and title 1990. In 2022 Latvijas Jūras akadēmija (Latvian Maritime Academy - IAU-010858) was incorporated into the university as an academic division, in 2024 Liepājas universitāte (Liepaja University - IAU-010958) was merged with the university and in April 2025 Rēzeknes Tehnoloģiju akadēmija (Rezekne Academy of Technologies - IAU-013926) was also merged with the university.
