Also delivered jointly by Riga Technical University and the University of Latvia, this doctorate trains specialists in high-energy particle physics and accelerator technology, with an explicit aim of building Latvia's own scientific capacity in the field and offsetting the loss of research talent abroad. Alongside a strong theoretical base and skills such as programming and computational modelling, the programme centres on a substantial independent research project, including the possibility of extended placements at facilities such as CERN.
Students learn to analyse data and synthesise new knowledge from it, identify which of their skills apply to a specific research problem, critically evaluate the quality of their own results, and communicate the value of their research to audiences at different levels, including incorporating and supporting the work of other researchers in the field. Graduates are prepared as highly skilled experts across a wide range of employment settings, valued for strong data analysis, programming and computational modelling skills, both within Latvia and internationally.
