Overview
This research degree gives students the opportunity to carry out an independent research project in the performing arts. A taught component worth 10 ECTS credits supplies the tools for completing such a project, by considering what research in this field means in academic, ethical, political and practical terms. Specialist areas open to students include popular culture, pedagogy, critical theory, non-Western musical traditions, how musical performance is theatrical, practice-based research in dance and theatre, cultural studies, and collaborative processes in music and choreography.
The course is taught part-time during the day over six semesters, by research, at MQF Level 7 with 90 ECTS credits. A full-time route is offered as well, and the Registrar's website has more information.
Admission requires a Bachelor's degree graded Second Class Honours or above, in the same or a related field, or one with an average mark of at least 65%, or a comparable degree. A professional qualification or experience that the Board accepts as partly meeting the requirements may also count, and a preparatory programme may be required. Applicants must give a provisional dissertation title, a research proposal and a statement from their head of department.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UM applies course-specific entry requirements under its regulations and bye-laws. Local applicants are assessed on qualifications such as the Matriculation Certificate, International Baccalaureate, or European Baccalaureate; international applicants hold overseas qualifications evaluated individually for comparability with UM's standards, with no extra requirements beyond the course's own criteria. MATSEC-qualification applicants must apply as soon as they receive their first result slip after the May/June session; students sitting September resits should apply by the course's first deadline rather than waiting on resit results. After evaluation, the Office of the Registrar issues a decision letter. Admission may also be granted via Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL) for undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses.
