Overview
This part-time, daytime Master of Science in paediatrics is mainly by research. It offers advanced education, training and research to graduates in dental surgery, medicine, pharmacy and any other field that the Board of Studies regards as relevant, and it aims to develop knowledge and research skills that are useful in academic and clinical work. Students specialise in a chosen area, and the core subjects are research practicals, statistics and research methods.
The taught study-units introduce research methods through the essentials of health information, epidemiology and qualitative methods, as well as ethical concerns in research. They also give students a basic grounding in statistics for health research.
Applicants must find a supervisor in Malta and submit a research proposal when applying, so that the application can be referred for consideration.
The course takes five semesters, sits at MQF Level 7 and carries 90 ECTS credits. Entry requires a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, a Bachelor or Master of Dental Surgery, or a Second Class Honours degree or better in a health-science-related discipline, or a qualification that Senate, on the Board's recommendation, regards as equivalent.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UM applies course-specific entry requirements under its regulations and bye-laws. Local applicants are assessed on qualifications such as the Matriculation Certificate, International Baccalaureate, or European Baccalaureate; international applicants hold overseas qualifications evaluated individually for comparability with UM's standards, with no extra requirements beyond the course's own criteria. MATSEC-qualification applicants must apply as soon as they receive their first result slip after the May/June session; students sitting September resits should apply by the course's first deadline rather than waiting on resit results. After evaluation, the Office of the Registrar issues a decision letter. Admission may also be granted via Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL) for undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses.
