BSc (Hons) Social Work, programme code SH344, is a full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Mauritius, taken over a minimum of three years. The university traces its social work teaching back to the 1970s, when it trained social workers who were already civil servants, and the degree itself was introduced in 1994 and updated several times since. It is aimed at school leavers who want a professional career in the field.
Study combines lectures and small-group tutorials with case studies, role plays, study visits and field practice, including placements in social work agencies. Core modules include social work theory, psychology, sociology, social policy, economics, criminal justice social work, research methods and the management of social services, and the programme closes with a dissertation.
The degree carries 200 credits at NQF level 8. Students may exit earlier with a diploma at 120 credits or a certificate at 60. Graduates have gone on to government service, private companies and non-profit organisations in Mauritius and abroad.
