Diploma/BSc (Hons) Journalism, programme code SH351, is the journalism specialisation of the University of Mauritius's full-time Communication Studies programme, which also offers a Business Communication route as SH350. The diploma normally takes two years and the BSc (Hons) three.
Students learn the main theories of communication and media and apply them in practice, with hands-on work in areas such as web design and audio-visual production. Work placements and internships let them test their skills in a professional setting, and the degree adds a research project. The programme examines the economic, social and cultural role of communication, including the effect of digitalisation and artificial intelligence.
The degree is worth 202 LCCS credits and the diploma 136. Journalism graduates are expected to work in newspapers, radio, television and multimedia outlets as well as newer digital media players and organisations that need specialist reporting.
