Overview
Groningen's Art History bachelor's is run by a department that studies the visual arts, urbanism, architectural history, and landscape history together, examining how artworks, cities, and landscapes relate to each other and to their surrounding environments. The programme combines historical, theoretical, and practice-based courses, taught by an international faculty working alongside outside experts and institutions, and introduces students to professional practice from early in the degree, reflecting the view that specialists in the field need to encounter buildings, objects, and landscapes within their real surroundings rather than only in the classroom. Students take part in an excursion to a major European city, such as Berlin, London, or Florence, alongside further excursions within the Netherlands. After the bachelor's, graduates can continue into the Master's programme Arts and Culture, choosing from tracks including the research-oriented Arts, Media and Literary Studies route, Landscape History, an architecture and urbanism track, or Art History paired with Curatorial Studies.
