This Leiden specialisation brings together genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology into a single master's track. Students are trained through courses and research projects led by specialists in cellular imaging, animal disease models, omics technologies and their associated bioinformatics, plant genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology. Particular attention goes to applying these techniques within biotechnology, looking at how findings from model organisms can be carried over to improve crops or human health. Students drawn to topics such as cellular imaging, biotechnology, plant genetics, or microbial and molecular biology will find the specialisation treats these as connected fields rather than separate subjects. It is designed as a foundation either for research work based at a university or a dedicated research institute, or for a role within a bioscience company, giving graduates both laboratory training and exposure to applied biotechnological problems.
