Overview
The programme addresses the global burden of cardiovascular disease by examining the mechanisms behind it, developing treatments and therapies, and investigating risk management and preventive strategies, positioning students at the forefront of basic and clinical science within cardiovascular research. Students study the cardiovascular system broadly and carry out research at a basic, translational or pre-clinical level. They learn to turn a disease into a rigorous experimental model and to carry findings from that model back to the disease itself, deepening knowledge of underlying mechanisms or working toward therapeutic leads. Research projects, coursework and writing assignments cover varied cardiovascular topics such as stroke, heart failure, cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias, vascular disease and biology, and factors linked to cardiovascular risk, giving students experience across multiple laboratories. Broader societal issues woven into the programme include diversity, health equity, the development of animal-free research models, prevention, and the involvement of patients in cardiovascular research.
