Program details

Overview

Spatial and functional data analysis is introduced as a growing area across environmental science, economics, finance and other disciplines now routinely collecting complex data structures. The course distinguishes between spatial data aggregated over regions or lattices, described using classical spatial models, and data observed continuously over space, for example in studies of air quality or climate, where functional data analysis provides a natural framework. Methods covered range from curve and surface modelling through to analysing dynamic processes like volatility or yield-curve behaviour. A set of established models is paired with a handful of more recent developments, giving an introductory but coherent view of how these tools are applied in practice.
