MA/MS in Marine Resources and Society

The specialisation looks at the human dimension of marine resource management, building on the view that economics, law and governance are central to using ocean resources sustainably. It covers social and economic strategies for protecting, restoring and sustainably managing marine resources at scales from local to international, while accounting for differing social norms, cultural values, customary rules and local knowledge across regions. Course options include environmental economics, globalisation and politics, environmental policy, and law covering the international environment. Thesis topics associated with the specialisation have included fisheries certification schemes, the economics of overfishing, sustainability standards in aquaculture, and international agreements addressing marine plastic pollution.
