Program details

Overview

This criminology degree investigates crime, justice and punishment and prepares you for work in the criminal justice system and in crime prevention. Teaching is practical, drawing on case material, recent research and interactive seminars, and occasional field visits to courts, prisons and historic sites are possible. You examine why crime happens, whether punishment works, and how the media portray offending and its victims. Career preparation begins in the opening term, covering portfolio and CV building, volunteering, recruitment events and an annual conference. Partnerships with regional police forces and other agencies create opportunities for work experience. A placement year and a foundation year can be included. Each year builds on the last, moving from foundational theory to more specialised study in later years.
