Program details

Overview

Lasting ten months, this master's degree gives advanced training in researching how the climate varies, looking at natural and human-driven causes across the past, the present and the future. It is meant for students whose undergraduate studies were strong in physical geography or in earth science and who wish to move into a research environment. The syllabus explores the scholarly debates around climate change in earlier periods, and teaches the analytical and numerical methods used to work with climate and palaeoclimate data. Students practise interpreting results objectively and communicating them in an academic manner. They also gain experience with survey techniques, statistics, computing resources and a spread of climate and environmental ideas. Completing the course does not guarantee a place on a doctorate. Anyone hoping to carry on to a PhD must satisfy the separate entry conditions for doctoral research in geography.
