BA/BS in Forestry

Forestry majors learn to manage forest resources for a range of owners and goals, from timber-focused industrial lands to private properties managed for several uses and public lands emphasizing recreation or protection. The curriculum stresses sustainable practice and weighs ecological, biological, social, economic and ethical factors. Students first enroll as pre-forestry majors and apply once each year, during spring semester, to enter the professional curriculum. A required summer practicum lasting nine weeks takes place at an Alabama field center between the sophomore and junior years and teaches practical field skills. To be considered, applicants must have finished or be taking prerequisite courses in composition, biology, statistics and math. Chemistry courses are strongly advised, and accepted students attend a mandatory orientation in April.
