At Boston University, undergraduates in mechanical engineering explore subjects such as robot motion, flight, big data, sustainable energy, engineered tissue, new materials and science at both the nanoscale and the planetary scale. The College of Engineering wants graduates to be societal engineers who put their training to work for the public good.
Students may focus on aerospace, manufacturing, sustainable energy technology, nanotechnology, machine learning or technological innovation. The engineering science courses fall into two streams, energy and fluids, and structures and motion, taken mainly in the second and third years.
In the final year, students take an instrumentation course and a capstone design project. Laboratory experiments accompany natural science classes and most engineering science classes, and the lab sequence culminates in an in-depth course on mechanical measurement.
