The biology major introduces students to the life sciences, from the largest ecosystems to the smallest microorganisms, with the aim of deepening appreciation for the intricacies of creation. Students learn through lectures, labs and field research. Many required classes meet at the university's environmental stewardship center, a facility built for fieldwork and environmental ethics. Coursework covers botany, zoology, ecology, cell biology, microbiology and genetics, along with physics, chemistry, communication and ethics. Required courses are complemented by related electives that let students focus on their interests. Students may complete an undergraduate research project with faculty approval. The degree carries a STEM designation and leads to graduate biology programs, medical fields or work as biological technicians. Concordia's setting and faculty emphasize wonder at the living world, and small classes give biology students steady access to professors and to equipment used in field and laboratory work.
