BA/BS in Linguistic, Comparative, and Related Language Studies and Services

Boston University's College of Arts & Sciences offers this major for students who want to combine the scientific study of language with French culture. In linguistics classes they look at how sounds, words, sentences and meanings are structured, as well as shared features of languages, differences among them, language in society, and how languages change over time. French classes develop grammar, pronunciation and the ability to write and speak precisely. Expected results are advanced reading, writing, speaking and listening in French, and thoughtful, analytical work with French and Francophone literary and cultural traditions. The major is made up of thirteen four-unit courses, each passed with at least a C. Five courses are in French, including one third-year-level language course and a two-part literature survey, and the rest are in linguistics. Students also take coursework in the BU Hub general education program.
