BA/BS in Biology, General

Hood's biology major offers a wide and up-to-date grounding in the life sciences. Study ranges from genes and cells up to entire ecosystems, with time spent in lectures, laboratories and the field. Facilities include labs devoted to ecology, microbiology and physiology, as well as molecular biology and cell culture. There is also a greenhouse for studying plants and a cluster of labs set up for aquatic organisms. Students may take part in faculty research using this equipment. Graduates prepare for graduate school, medicine and other health fields, or move directly into careers. Undergraduates can enroll in graduate-level electives, an opportunity small colleges seldom provide, and the department also offers a biology minor. Anyone curious can use the program page to ask for information, arrange a visit or apply. A faculty contact is named there, and the college catalog contains the complete requirements and course descriptions for the major.
