Overview

This associate degree develops creative and analytical thinking and is designed mainly for students heading to a four-year school. A base of studio classes is combined with art history, art beyond Europe and America, and the contribution of women artists. Studio options start with design and drawing and extend to painting, pottery, printmaking, photography, figure study and sculptural design. The teaching artists are active practitioners. Each spring the Hatheway Gallery hosts a student exhibition, and students may also enter regional shows. Earning the Associate in Fine Arts lets students complete the early studio work at a community college, which costs less than starting at a university, and then pursue a bachelor's degree in arts or fine arts. A 2+2 partnership with the Edwardsville campus of Southern Illinois University assures that credits carry over, and students may take the degree through the Honors College.
