Overview

Fire science instruction runs from beginning skills to leadership preparation. Courses are given online, in mixed formats, and in person at partner fire departments and the college's training center in Bethalto, where a mobile unit nicknamed The Jake supports hands-on work. Students can get ready for promotion tests, improve their prospects for full-time jobs, and earn higher state certifications in the fire service. One Associate in Applied Science fits new and mid-level firefighters and includes a path toward a four-year degree. A second degree, focused on leadership, is meant for veterans of the service who are moving into supervisory positions. High school seniors can start training early through the Fire Science Academy, run with local school districts. The teaching staff have served in full-time, part-time on-call and volunteer fire companies, and their ranks range from firefighter all the way to chief.
