Apprentices in this pathway learn to build and maintain the lines that carry electricity to homes and businesses. Training spans four years and is split between paid work for a sponsoring employer and short blocks of classroom study, so most of the learning happens on real utility equipment.
Classroom blocks begin with safety, hazard awareness and basic direct-current theory, then move into alternating current, codes, and how power is generated and distributed. Later terms turn to underground systems, single-phase and poly-phase equipment, substations, metering, and emergency response, ending with a renewable energy capstone. Trainer certification, OSHA, CPR and first aid are also required along the way.
Entry works through an employer. A student first completes the nine-month Electric Power Distribution program, then finds a municipality or utility willing to sponsor the apprenticeship. That employer arranges the apprenticeship contract with the state Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards, and the apprentice begins working toward a career as a line worker.
