Program details

Overview

This applied associate degree trains students to become American Sign Language to English interpreters. The program is offered at the Annandale campus and online, and a shorter certificate in ASL is available for people who want basic signing skills. In lively classes, students rehearse signing and interpreting. The curriculum prepares them for interpreter certification at state and national levels, including the Virginia screening process, the national registry for interpreters and an assessment for educational interpreters. Graduates can work as educational or community interpreters, teaching assistants or special education teachers, and ASL proficiency is useful in health care, social services and public safety. NOVA scholarships may help offset tuition. People interested can request information or begin an application online. Experience gained outside the classroom, such as certifications, advanced placement exams or military training, may earn college credit, and advisors can explain transfer options.
