Overview

The American Sign Language degree is part of the Deaf Studies program at Sierra College and leads to an Associate of Arts. It is designed to prepare students for transfer into a Deaf Studies major at a four-year university. Students build sign language skills to a level suited to personal or work-related communication, and they study the history of the deaf community, deaf culture and deaf education. The skills also help those entering counseling, nursing or law enforcement. A matching certificate is available alongside the degree. Graduates find work as sign language teachers, interpreters, social workers, audiologists, speech-language pathologists and community advocates. The college catalog lists every requirement and the learning outcomes, which spell out the knowledge and abilities students are expected to have at completion.
