Program details

Overview

This master's degree in Applied Linguistics gives students a firm grounding in linguistic theory and research while also providing real experience teaching languages. It is intended for people who plan to continue to a doctorate or to enter professional roles tied to language. A full-time student normally completes the work over two academic years. Every course must be passed with at least a B. At the end, students demonstrate what they have learned through an electronic portfolio they assemble in a dedicated seminar. The department reports that many graduates later pursue further study at well-regarded universities at home and overseas. Candidates hoping for teaching assistantships in certain languages are asked to include a statement of teaching philosophy, and an extra reference from a former supervisor is helpful.
