MA/MS in Germanic Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics

Recently reshaped, this master's degree welcomes students who come to German thought from other disciplines or who are still developing their language skills. It deepens work in literature, critical theory, philosophy, psychoanalysis and media studies. Seminars at the graduate level are shared with doctoral candidates, so master's students join the broader community of scholars and take part in departmental events. Because serious engagement with German texts depends on language ability, such training is woven into the curriculum. Elective choices can lean toward certificates like Poetics and Theory or Museum Studies. The degree can be a final credential or a stepping stone toward doctoral work in German or neighboring fields. Students complete thirty-two credits, equal to eight courses, and at least twenty-four of those must be taken in residence at NYU.
