BA/BS in Biology, General

The biology degree is offered through the Department of Biology and emphasizes research-based learning in and beyond the classroom. Different pathways suit students aiming at life science, biomedical work, environmental science, or teaching and community engagement. Students use modern instruments and field equipment, collect their own data, and may design projects in the New River Valley, Appalachia or the Amazon through a study abroad option. Anatomy and physiology are taught with human cadavers, an experience normally reserved for medical schools. A campus greenhouse and a natural history collection support hands-on study. The first year includes two integrative biology courses, and the second year adds evolution and a science, culture and society course. Graduates have entered environmental agencies, hospital systems, public health and secondary teaching. Future biology teachers can finish their teaching credential in a graduate program.
