Overview

History at St. Mary's aims to produce students fluent in the past who recognize how closely today depends on it and who can help shape a community guided by ethics. The history faculty stresses how varied and complicated societies are and prepares students to meet a world unlike the one they expected. Students sharpen their abilities in research, writing, analysis and interpretation, as well as spoken and written presentation, which equip them for the private sector, government, advanced study or law school. The Bachelor of Arts offers several tracks, including a Public History track that combines an introductory course with an internship, and teacher certification is possible. A combined bachelor's and master's route lets students earn both degrees on an accelerated schedule with savings. A minor is available for those who prefer a shorter commitment.
