Program details

Overview

This program gives students the background to understand energy, climate and air-quality problems at both local and large scales, and to work toward solutions using renewable, efficient and low-emission energy systems. Students study causes in detail and learn to judge whether proposed fixes truly help. Typical coursework touches on renewable energy sources, air pollution inside and outside buildings, efficient building design, climate change, clean vehicles, weather systems, power grids and the management of air quality. Students have room to shape their own path, and an honors option is available. The major sits within the School of Engineering at Stanford University, an undergraduate campus in California. The Stanford Bulletin carries the official requirements, and prospective students are pointed there for course lists and program rules before they declare.
