Program details

Overview

Bioengineering treats living systems as a field for engineering, with applications from human health to environmental sustainability. Two schools, Medicine and Engineering, jointly support the department, which aims to combine engineering with the life sciences to produce new biomedical and biological technologies. Majors build a base in chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics, then take engineering fundamentals that include an introductory bioengineering course and programming. From the sophomore year onward they work through core classes before choosing electives that match their interests. Honors and coterminal options are offered. The major sits within the School of Engineering at Stanford University, an undergraduate campus in California. The Stanford Bulletin carries the official requirements, and prospective students are pointed there for course lists and program rules before they declare.
