PhD in Music

Doctoral study in music at Stony Brook includes a performance doctorate alongside research doctorates plus critical music studies and composition tracks. The department stresses the music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries while covering many other areas. Students pick seminars from a broad range of subjects and take part in groups such as a baroque chamber ensemble, chamber music, a choral society, the symphony and an opera workshop. Admission requirements are set by the department in addition to those of the Graduate School, and separate descriptions apply to entry at the master's level and at the doctoral level. The department chairperson, graduate director and coordinator are listed on the catalog page. This description is based on the official university page for the program. Applicants should confirm current requirements, dates and costs with the department before applying.
