The mathematics department at Union aims to sharpen logical reasoning, abstract thought and problem solving, and it readies students who plan to continue into graduate mathematics. Related offerings in statistics, along with financial and actuarial mathematics, tie the subject to the natural sciences, engineering, social questions and interdisciplinary work.
Majors start with calculus and real analysis, then move through logic, set theory and both linear and abstract algebra. Later electives let them turn toward topology, probability, cryptology, knot theory, geometry, number theory or differential equations.
Faculty pursue their own scholarship, and undergraduates work alongside them in classes, in research and in independent study on advanced material. Students may declare a major or a minor, or combine mathematics with another field in an interdepartmental major, while a statistics minor welcomes students from any discipline.
