The interdisciplinary program covering ancient history and the archaeology of the ancient Near East and Mediterranean is run by a group of faculty from seven campus departments plus the Graduate Theological Union, with a chair, an advisor and a student affairs officer running it. The doctorate combines archaeology, history and related ancient-studies fields, and graduates have taken teaching positions in classics, art history, history, anthropology and Near Eastern studies departments. Students are not admitted for the MA alone, though doctoral students may file for one after the first stage.
Applications for Fall entry are due December 15, 2026. The GRE is not required. The program page also links to the department's own site for further detail. Admission details are listed in the Graduate Division program directory, along with department contact information. Applicants should confirm current requirements on the program's graduate admissions page.
