PhD in Classical and Ancient Studies

The PhD in The Ancient World is offered through the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World and spans cultures between the Atlantic end of the Mediterranean and East Asia, and eras from the Neolithic into the early medieval world. It aims to train scholars whose work crosses traditional departmental lines. Students enroll in seminars, colloquia, lectures and guided readings led by faculty at the institute, elsewhere at NYU and at other regional institutions. A visiting research scholar program brings in outside experts for seminars and public talks. Each student's course of study is shaped with a small faculty committee and recorded in a written doctoral contract, so programs are tailored to individual strengths and interests.
