The anthropology major, taught in the College of Arts and Sciences, explores human life across many places and periods. The department draws on social science, humanities and natural science approaches and introduces students to cultural, biological, archaeological and applied anthropology.
Besides the core major, the department provides a major in Anthropology Education for future teachers and three concentrations: Culture, Medicine, and Health; Human Rights and Global Instabilities; and Material Culture, Technology, and Design.
Students and alumni have done research in communities around the world, studied past societies and heritage preservation, and looked at primates, human biology and the health of populations. The mix of culture, biology, evolution and history makes the major a fit for those heading toward health professions or fields tied to environment, climate and sustainability.
