Soil science at Utah State is a graduate area dealing with how soil behaves chemically, physically and biologically. The program is especially active in water and irrigation questions facing the western United States, including digital soil mapping used for flood prediction and land restoration.
Students can direct their research toward soil and water chemistry, soil biology and ecology, nutrient availability, soil physics, water management, soil formation and classification, or sustainable agroecosystems. Environmental sensors are used to track greenhouse gas emissions and the movement of contaminants carried by mountain snowmelt.
Applications are accepted all year, with the best odds for those applying between October and January. Candidates provide a GRE score, transcripts and three recommendation contacts, and doctoral students complete a qualifying exam. Students lacking a background in plants, soils or a related field may need extra undergraduate courses.
