The Master of Arts in History is a two-year terminal program based on the Blacksburg campus and taught in residence. Students finish either a research portfolio made up of several projects or a thesis built around a single research question, and they may also add a certificate in public history.
The degree requires thirty-three credit hours: a core component, a set of electives, and the culminating project or thesis work. Coursework is combined with professional training and close partnerships with faculty and fellow students. Many students are funded through teaching assistantships.
Alumni have gone on to museums, classrooms, archives, law and community service. Applicants hold an accredited bachelor's degree, submit three letters of recommendation and a personal statement about research goals, and are admitted full-time for fall.
