Overview

The graduate certificate in nuclear engineering introduces the field through a short sequence of three graduate courses. It begins with a foundational course in nuclear engineering and builds a base in reactor physics. Students then choose electives to lean toward a particular interest, such as the fuel cycle, radiation measurement, thermal hydraulics of reactors, nuclear materials, or plant operations. Course options also include Monte Carlo methods, shielding, and safeguards. The coursework may later count toward a graduate degree, either in the mechanical or the nuclear engineering department. Current Virginia Tech graduate students request enrollment with a certificate form, while outside applicants submit the online graduate admission application. Elective choices let each participant tailor the certificate to a specific technical interest. Interested applicants can email the certificate contact listed on the catalog page for questions about enrollment.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Open to Virginia Tech graduate students and others not enrolled in a Virginia Tech graduate program. VT students complete the Application for Graduate Certificate Program form; non-VT students complete the online admission application.
