Program details

Overview

Firefighting is approached here as a broad public service, covering fire suppression, hazardous materials response, emergency medical care and prevention work in the community. Teaching staff come from the fire service themselves, and training happens in up-to-date facilities with current equipment. The curriculum totals 62 credits over two years and leads to an associate of applied science degree. Classes begin in August, January or June. Applicants do not have to be members of a fire department, although joining one is encouraged. The Firefighter I and II component brings added expenses. Students should budget as much as $250 for medical and physical requirements, $200 at most for a uniform, and $500 at most to rent turn-out gear. Each certification exam costs $80.
