This major equips learners to report and share stories that inform audiences in a fast-changing media environment. Students gain a grounding in checking facts, conducting interviews, crafting prose, and doing research. They also learn to manage social platforms, produce multimedia pieces, and work on air.
Students complete an internship that connects them with real newsroom and industry experience in the Detroit area. Coursework covers beat and feature reporting, the use of data in storytelling, and the ethics of communication. Newsroom simulations and hands-on projects reinforce each skill in realistic settings.
Students also study how new technologies, including AI tools and algorithm-driven platforms, change the making and consumption of news. Graduates head into reporting, editing, publishing, public relations, broadcasting, corporate communication, and law school. Learners finish with practical experience and the critical perspective needed to work in a complex information landscape.
