BA/BS in Economics

The page describes economics as the study of how people make decisions. Majors learn to build and analyze models of how resources are allocated and apply them to social problems. The degree can be combined with another field through double majors in economics and finance, economics and mathematics, or economics and political science. A core foundation is followed by upper-level economics electives. Students may attend on campus, online or through remote synchronous sessions. In the junior or senior year they take a research methods course, write a proposal and carry out a project with a faculty mentor. Internships with business, government and nonprofit organizations in western Massachusetts are available, and short-term study abroad courses and a semester exchange in Germany add international options. The major is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences at Westfield State University. Prospective students can request information, plan a campus visit or apply through the program page.
