Overview
The American University of Paris is an English-language institution in the French capital that follows the American liberal arts model.
Undergraduates sample a wide range of subjects before settling on a specialty, and roughly a third of their coursework comes from general education, a third from the major and the rest from electives that can build a minor or a second major. Students choose among 25 majors, including Applied Mathematics, Art History, Classical Civilization, Communication and Civil Society and Comparative Literature.
A Global Liberal Arts Core Curriculum frames the first years, developing writing, public speaking, quantitative and technological skills, and it includes an integrative inquiry requirement of two courses outside the major worth eight credits. Every student must also complete at least one experiential learning opportunity, such as an internship, which does not carry credit in itself.
The student body is strikingly international, with more than 110 nationalities represented, and the small scale of the community means classes are intimate and professors act as mentors.
Teaching is supported by study trips, for example a cultural visit to Fez, and by the city itself, which serves as a classroom and laboratory. The campus sits in central Paris, and a new flagship building on the Rue de l'Université is expanding the university's facilities.
Graduates go on to work in dozens of countries or to continue studies at leading universities in Europe and North America.
