Overview

Founded: 2015
Institution Type: University
Control Type: Public

Université de Guyane is a public French university based in Cayenne, in French Guiana on the northeastern coast of South America.

Created in 2015, it presents itself as the only French and European university located on the South American continent, and its identity is shaped by the surrounding Amazonian forest, its coasts and the nearby Kourou space centre. International outreach is a central part of its strategy.

The university works with partners in the Americas, Europe and Africa, takes part in Erasmus+ exchanges, and cooperates with organisations such as France Éducation International and the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie. Its position between Brazil and Suriname also supports regional links with MERCOSUR and Caribbean networks, including an Interreg Caribbean project on agroecology training.

Visiting students arrive through nomination by their home university under Erasmus+ or Campus France.

After nomination, the Bureau des Relations Internationales contacts them directly; they must provide a learning agreement, an information form, a registration file, an identity photo and a passport copy, and then complete their enrolment once in Guiana. The university has no student housing of its own but helps newcomers search for accommodation, and yellow fever vaccination is compulsory to enter the territory.

The institution also hosts a stage of the Erasmus Mundus master TROPIMUNDO, a two-year programme on tropical biodiversity and ecosystem management that requires study in at least two countries.
