How High School GPA Weighting Works

The Fundamental Differences

High schools generally calculate GPA using one of two foundational structures:

  • Unweighted GPA: The total average measured on a standard 4.00 scale where all courses hold equal numerical value regardless of classroom difficulty. An 'A' in remedial math counts identically to an 'A' in Advanced Placement Calculus.
  • Weighted GPA: Incorporates additional numerical quality points into the scale to reflect course rigor, allowing for numeric totals above the standard 4.00 cap.
