Overview
Barbados Community College's Certificate in Trauma & Social Work (Trauma Informed Practice) is a continuing-education course built to develop knowledge and skill in trauma-informed helping. Students are introduced to the frameworks used to understand trauma and examine its effects through a social-justice lens, looking at impact across individuals, families, communities and healthcare organisations, with particular attention to resilience, coping and client strengths.
The course also turns the lens on students themselves, asking them to recognise how they personally are affected by trauma and how to reduce vicarious traumatisation in their own practice. A further strand looks at how social-service organisations and professionals can lower the risk of re-traumatising vulnerable clients who come to them for help.
