Overview
Overview Help build the future of enhanced supports and rights for victims of crime. The one-year Victimology Ontario College Graduate Certificate program prepares you for work in a variety of fields, providing services to victims of crime. This one-year program provides specialized knowledge and skills in victimology and in the provision of victim services. You also explore the history and theories of victimization, with applied victim-centred focus. Combining theoretical and applied learning, it includes a field placement of more than 140 hours. It is in this setting where you learn about victims' issues and perspectives first-hand from experts in the field. Practicum options include: victim crisis units police services victim advocacy centres indigenous healing centres women's shelters community action groups Overall, you develop knowledge of crisis response, sudden and traumatic loss, and victim populations. Learn about crime and its effects on victims in the criminal justice system. In your practicum, you integrate theory with practice and contribute to victim service initiatives within your community. The Victimology program offers you the means to pursue a unique career. This program is the first graduate certificate program offered by a Canadian college specializing in victimology. More than just theory, this program puts you in the field, allowing you to learn how to look at issues from the victim's perspective. You may find work in a wide variety of fields helping victims of crime. Work opportunities may exist in: social services child protection crisis response criminal justice system other areas related to victimization To qualify for this graduate certificate, you must complete the program within three years.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This part-time online graduate certificate requires an Ontario College Diploma, Ontario College Advanced Diploma, or degree, or an equivalent, in a medical, legal, or social-services field, per Algonquin's Victimology program page; applicants holding a diploma or degree in another discipline are assessed individually through the college's Eligibility Package. International transcripts must be evaluated through the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada or World Education Services, and applicants who are not native English speakers must meet the college's language-proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic overall band 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band, TOEFL iBT overall 4.5 with a minimum of 4.5 in each component for tests taken from 21 January 2026, or Duolingo English Test overall 120 with a minimum of 120 in Literacy and no component below 105. Admission itself carries no police-record requirement, but the program's mandatory field-placement course requires a clear Police Records Check for Service with the Vulnerable Sector, which students must obtain from their local police department before their placement deadline.

Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca: for September 2027 entry the application portal opens 26 September 2026, the equal consideration date is 1 February 2027, and offers must be accepted by 1 May 2027, while later applications are still assessed as space allows; Algonquin publishes no separate equal-consideration date for the January 2027 intake. International applicants apply directly via Algonquin's own International Application Portal, not ontariocolleges.ca; instead of one fixed date the college posts a program-by-program closing-date list shortly before each term starts - for Fall 2026 most programs closed 16 September 2026, technology programs by 9-10 September; no Winter 2027 or Fall 2027 international list has been posted yet, so admission remains effectively rolling until each list is published and fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
