Overview

This Bachelor of Arts Major, offered by Bishop's University's Department of Liberal Arts within the Faculty of Humanities, provides an interdisciplinary study of Western cultural traditions across art, literature, philosophy, and related fields. Small-group discussion is used in every class. The program can be completed in three or four years, with intake in both the Fall and Winter terms, and allows students to pursue a dual major alongside their Liberal Arts studies. Coursework builds interdisciplinary knowledge and analytical skills applicable across a range of fields rather than a single specialization. Graduates pursue careers such as archivist, editor, human resources specialist, journalist, mediator, public relations specialist, and technical writer, as well as further study in law, education, or graduate programs in the humanities and social sciences.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Bishop's University's Liberal Arts page publishes no admission requirements of its own and directs applicants to the university's general admission requirements. Quebec CEGEP applicants need an estimated minimum R-Score of 24, the standard threshold for undergraduate programs outside the School of Education; DEC holders may apply regardless of their program of study. Canadian high-school applicants need five Grade 12 university-preparatory courses, including Grade 12 English, with an estimated minimum overall average of 80%. International high-school applicants are assessed individually against an equivalent secondary credential. English proficiency is required of every applicant unless met by a Quebec DEC, three years of secondary schooling or 30 post-secondary credits taught in English or French, or a qualifying test score: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0); TOEFL iBT 90/20 for tests before January 21, 2026, or 4.5/4.0 on the redesigned scale from that date; Cambridge B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176; PTE Academic 65/60; Duolingo English Test 115/90; or LanguageCert Academic 70-74/65.
