Overview
Classical Studies at Bishop's University is a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) offered as a Major, Minor, or Honours by the Department of Classical Studies in the Faculty of Humanities. The program examines the ancient Mediterranean world through the literature, mythology, history, culture, art, and archaeology of Greek and Roman civilizations, with opportunities to study Latin and Greek. Students interested in graduate study are encouraged to complete the Honours option, which is recommended for admission to graduate programs in fields such as archaeology, classics, history, and religious studies. The department also hosts an annual marathon reading of a classical epic such as Homer's Odyssey or Ovid's Metamorphoses. The program admits students each Fall and Winter term and is open to applicants from high school, CEGEP, another university, or outside Canada. Graduates are prepared for careers such as archaeologist, archivist, museum curator, translator, journalist, and public policy researcher, among other roles drawing on historical and linguistic analysis.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is assessed by applicant category. CEGEP students who have completed or are completing a DEC may apply regardless of the DEC's field of study, with no specific prerequisite courses required; the estimated minimum admission average is a 24 global R-Score (25 R-Score for School of Education programs). Canadian high school applicants from outside Quebec must complete five Grade 12 level university-preparatory courses, including Grade 12 level English, three Approved courses, and one further Approved or Option course; required and approved courses vary by province. International, IB, transfer, mature-student, and other applicant categories have their own published requirements. All applicants must submit a recent transcript, and CEGEP applicants must also provide their Quebec permanent code. Meeting the posted minimum does not guarantee admission, as applications are evaluated competitively when demand exceeds available spaces.
