Program details

Overview

This undergraduate program, offered as a Major within Bishop's University's Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, surveys major philosophical traditions and thinkers. Housed in the Department of Philosophy within the Faculty of Humanities, the curriculum emphasizes two broad areas, Continental European Philosophy and the Western Philosophical Tradition, taught primarily through seminar-style classes in which students take on leadership roles presenting their own work. Advanced students have the opportunity to pursue independent studies on specialized topics. The program can be completed in three or four years, with intake in both the Fall and Winter terms. Many students combine the Philosophy major with a second major, such as Education or Pre-Law. Graduates go on to careers and further study in fields including law, education, international aid, and other fields requiring strong analytical and writing skills.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Bishop's Philosophy (B.A.) program page publishes no admission requirements of its own and points to the university's general admission requirements page, summarised here. Canadian high-school applicants need five Grade 12 university-preparatory courses including Grade 12 English, with Bishop's citing an estimated minimum admission average of 80% for all programs, though files are reviewed holistically rather than by strict cutoff. CEGEP applicants with a Quebec DEC do not need to complete specific prerequisite courses and may apply from any field of study; Bishop's cites an estimated minimum R-Score of 24 for admission. International high-school applicants normally need 12 years of schooling and a credential granting university access at home, with the minimum average assessed individually. English proficiency is required of every applicant, met by a Quebec DEC, three years of secondary schooling or 30 post-secondary credits in English or French, or a test: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0); TOEFL iBT 90/20 for tests before January 21, 2026, or 4.5/4.0 on the redesigned scale from that date; Cambridge B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176; PTE Academic 65/60; Duolingo English Test 115/90; or LanguageCert Academic 70-74/65.
