Program details
Overview
This undergraduate program, offered as a Major within Bishop's University's Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, provides an intensive study of sport in society within a liberal arts framework. Housed in the Department of Sports Studies within the Faculty of Social Sciences, the program requires students to declare a concentration in one to three of Athletic Development, Business and Society, or Health and Exercise. It can be completed in three or four years, with intake in both the Fall and Winter terms. The program combines academic coursework with practical placement opportunities, including for-credit placements with Bishop's Gaiters varsity athletics program in areas such as game-day operations, team operations, communications, and athletic therapy. Graduates are prepared for a range of sport- and recreation-related careers spanning management, coaching, sports media, and allied health fields, and the program provides a foundation for further graduate study in sport-related disciplines.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Bishop's Sports Studies (B.A.) program page publishes no admission requirements of its own and points to the university's general admission requirements page, summarised here. Canadian high-school applicants need five Grade 12 university-preparatory courses including Grade 12 English, with Bishop's citing an estimated minimum admission average of 80% for all programs, though files are reviewed holistically rather than by strict cutoff. CEGEP applicants with a Quebec DEC do not need to complete specific prerequisite courses and may apply from any field of study; Bishop's cites an estimated minimum R-Score of 24 for admission. International high-school applicants normally need 12 years of schooling and a credential granting university access at home, with the minimum average assessed individually. English proficiency is required of every applicant, met by a Quebec DEC, three years of secondary schooling or 30 post-secondary credits in English or French, or a test: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0); TOEFL iBT 90/20 for tests before January 21, 2026, or 4.5/4.0 on the redesigned scale from that date; Cambridge B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176; PTE Academic 65/60; Duolingo English Test 115/90; or LanguageCert Academic 70-74/65.
